PSS “DARE” Event/Experience

Early AR/VR Experiments

An early Augmented Reality technology demonstration developed by Chris Olsen circa 2003. The demo used optical technologies to motion capture tiny props and miniature real world R/C cars racing around a small circular set, at hundreds of frames per second, to drive CGI animated cars, and “pov” camera views within the live CGI rendered experience displayed overhead. The result is one of the earliest examples of Augmented Reality, in which people interacting with real world objects drive CG elements in a Virtual world. This technique was designed to bridge the gap between traditional and digital artists working within the Visual Effects Industry, and Chris’s approach has since been used extensively on such films as POLAR EXPRESS, AVATAR, the LORD OF THE RINGS and the final STAR WARS trilogy.
